Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess dovetailed enhanced Gules and Argent, on a pale of the first between in base a scimitar and a Roman ax, the handle broken, of the like, a cannon Or charged with a bayonet Azure.  Attached below the shield a Red scroll inscribed BATIR ET COMBATTRE in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Scarlet and white are the colors used for the Corps of Engineers.  The red horizontal and vertical areas represent a beam supported by a post and allude to the constructional function of the Battalion.  The cannon and bayonet refer to the initial organization of the Battalion, it being formed from existing companies, formerly elements of Artillery and Infantry units; and likewise signify its combat designation.  The dual mission, engineering and combat, is further indicated by the dovetail, a construction principle, interlocking the two functions.  The scimitar is for the Tunisian Campaign and the broken ax for Italy.  The motto translates to To Build and To Battle.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 682d Engineer Combat Battalion on 14 December 1951.  It was redesignated for the 682d Engineer Battalion on 24 September 1963.
